I didn’t get any privacy until much later that night when everyone went to bed. Of course, I had no intention of sleeping. I took out the black candle and looked at it.

Almost half left, huh?

I should have asked Dad if he had anymore evil candles. Without thinking too much about it, I lit the candle. As usual, the black smoke overwhelmed me, and I felt myself lose consciousness as I became the smoke.

I stood outside of a familiar cabin in the woods. While I’d never been there, I remembered it from Kalli’s dreams. Worried that appearing as myself would traumatize the girl when younger me summoned her to Earth, I altered my face to the illusion I was using when I explored Origin. That combined with the blue robe I’d seen draped over the chair in her dream completed the ensemble.

No sooner had I completed the illusion than a pair emerged from the forest. I recognized the nun from the inn, but my attention was focused on her companion. While she had grown up a lot since the time I’d rescued her from Mardella, Kalli was unmistakable. I wanted to hug her so bad it hurt. However, she was a timid girl, probably eleven or twelve years old. She clasped her hands behind her back and ignored me by focusing her attention on the nun.

The nun gave her a pat on the backside and said, “Go on now. You asked for a master, and there one is. Introduce yourself properly.”

She took a few steps forward, scowling back at the nun as she did so. I took the opportunity to try and break the ice. “Hello, little one. Have you awakened?”

Kalli turned her attention to me, looking me up and down. “You aren’t much bigger than I am. Er, I mean, yes, I’ve awakened. My name is Kalliphae.”

“Tell me what you can do,” I said, ignoring her comment about my size.

She squeezed her eyes shut, and her face turned red. After a few seconds, she let out a deep breath. “I can’t do it.”

“It only happens when she’s angry,” the nun supplied helpfully. “She catches fire.”

I smiled, remembering the time she did just that before punching Alex in the nose. Kalli scowled at me and grumbled, “It’s not funny!”

I smiled at her, feeling affection despite myself. “Don’t worry, Kalliphae. I promise, you’re going to be an amazing pyromancer.”

“Is that what I am?” she squealed. “Does that mean you’ll teach me?”

“Of course,” I replied. “I’ll teach you everything I know.”

The nun nodded at me. “I’ll leave her in your hands, then. Please, see to it that she gets back to the monastery when you’re done with her.”

“Sure,” I replied, trying to remember the spells she knew when I met her. Fortunately, there weren’t many.

Feeling a bit more confident, Kalli walked past me toward the cabin. “Do you live out here?”

I shook my head. “No. This cabin is just here for our lessons. Feel free to treat it as your home away from home.
